UFC’s Women of War
By NICOLE KATO
Men of Hawaii make way, as UFC Gym hosts an ongoing women’s MMA small group Wednesdays and Fridays at 5 p.m. that teaches MMA techniques and conditioning.
Richard De Los Reyes and girlfriend Bernice Aurellano conduct a tag-team type of fitness routine for the wahine of Oahu.
De Los Reyes teaches MMA techniques on Wednesdays and Aurellano takes that technique and ties it in with conditioning drills specific for that week’s technique on Fridays.
“I’m trying to do something revolutionary,” De Los Reyes explains. “There are a lot of women who are uncomfortable taking crowded classes with men. The class size and male-to-female ratio makes them uncomfortable.
The Wednesday and Friday classes are a great way for women (all skill levels welcome) to learn mixed martial arts in a personalized environment and get started on their fitness goals.
De Los Reyes and Aurellano decided to head this class and the personalities of the duo complement each other well.
“Bernice is a lot more compassion than me,” De Los Reyes says good heartedly. “But both of us together have a better impact, a stronger impact on the female community that wants to learn mixed martial arts.”
Aurellano has an impressive fitness resume and placed in the Contra Costa 2011 Bikini Class, San Jose Championships Bikini Class in 2011 and 2012, and the San Francisco 2012 Bikini Class. She currently works as a personal trainer coach at UFC Gym. De Los Reyes also works at UFC Gym as an MMA instructor and started gyms and fitness centers in Connecticut.
