BMW is known for its combination of luxury and performance. With models such as the legendary M3 and M5, the company has a long and illustrious lineup of incredible cars. Joseph Lydick, owner of this 2000 BMW M5, has come to appreciate these qualities.
Lydick has always been a track enthusiast. Originally an import fan, he cut his teeth on the tracks in performance-minded burners such as the Nissan 350Z and slightly more luxurious G35. However, the BMW’s amazing all-round performance has captured his heart.
The clean, sexy lines of the E39 model are even more appreciable thanks to the gorgeous silver paint. Nicknamed the “Millineum Falcon,” Lydick prefers to keep the exterior relatively simple with some upgraded badging as well as a set of tuning halos.
Lydick is an avid racer and before relocating to Hawaii, this BMW was regularly tracked at Pacific Raceway in Kent, Washington. Lydick noticed severe understeer in the corners and opted to replace the front wheels with squared style 65s set at 18×9.5 w/15mm spacers in the front and 10mm in the rear. The resulting increase in handling performance is noticeable when combined with EBC brake pads and the Bilstein PSS coilovers.
The OEM power of the E39 is already a healthy 400HP and 395TQ but Lydick has added some additional goodies to up the ante. Twin AFE intakes add considerable breathing room for the engine while a Supersprint X-pipe and set of Dinan mufflers offer up more power. Performance is increased thanks to the TMS/Conforti tune, which completes the package.
Although performance is always forefront in Joe’s mind, the M5s luxurious interior blankets him in refinement. Practically perfect, he has had various bits wrapped in carbon fiber as a compliment.
From Lydick’s perspective, this BMW is the ultimate package. He has driven 4,000 miles in one road trip, raced the car relentlessly, and carried $400 worth of groceries with not a care. Not bad.
