Single Leg Counter

By BURT RICHARDSON

The single leg is one of the most common takedowns in wrestling and is often used in MMA. You must be able to counter it to avoid being taken down.

As in the clinch and on the ground, controlling the opponent’s head is essential. That keeps him from getting into position to apply leverage and force you to the ground. If the opponent already has your leg, push his head down as far as you can and turn away from him. You can now step away and free your leg from his grip by lifting and pulling in a kicking motion. You don’t have to worry about giving your back as you have control of his head. Face him and continue the fight!
