Side Choke
By Burton Richardson
This is a sneaky choke that works well against seasoned fighters. With the opponent on all fours, you are at his back, but you haven’t moved to put in your hooks. Your opponent doesn’t want you to get complete control of his back, so he is going to defend the hooks first.
But you have other ideas. Instead of going the normal route, you go directly for the choke from the side. He isn’t expecting it and you can sink the choke deep before he recognizes it. Lock your hand over your biceps and keep your weight down and back so he can’t flip you. Then, just like the rear naked choke, constrict your arms hard until you get the tap. Fight over!
