Sports were everything for Micah Abreu–Laybon, and he views MMA as the ultimate competitors sport. Growing up, he always practiced some sort of martial arts. “It was just kind of a mandatory thing in my family,” he says. “But it wasn’t until I came home from college that I really got into MMA. What really interested me was the fact that it was like a modern day gladiator.” For the past two years, Abreu-Laybon (7-1, amateur) has been a part of the 808 Fight Factory family and holds two belts in two different weight classes. Now that he is taking the next step of his MMA career, he was switched camps to what is now known as Hawaii MMA Elite. “I am grateful to be a part of the team where some of Hawaii’s UFC fighters reside and train at,” he says. When he’s not training at Hawaii MMA Elite, you can find him at Chris Ranes, Kakaako Boxing Club and Caveirinha Jiu-Jitsu. This next step also involves him making his pro debut Aug. 2 at 145-lbs. (Stay tuned for more details on that!) With all the training Abreu-Laybon does, he still finds time to raise his son, Rhylan. “He’s my motivation and my reason for never giving up,” he explains. “He gave me a second chance at a better life, and I’m using it to give him the best life possible.” … United MMA, spearheaded by Ken Lee, has a new location. Check them out at 94-530 Ukee St. in Waipio Gentry, or give them a call at 450-5700 for more information.
