Hawaii’s Michael Balasi will take part in the opening bout for ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” March 7 (Friday) event in Pala, Calif. “Michael Balasi is a huge underdog,” says trainer Bruce Kawano. “The guy has a minor title (WBC Youth Champion) and undefeated in 21 bouts with 11 wins by knockout. He’s not the fastest, strongest or a natural athlete, but always goes in there with the will to win. He’s like a real-life “Rocky” movie.” Balasi goes up against Dusty Hernandez-Harrison in the boxing bout, which will telecast at 6 p.m. PST … Another local fighter is making a name for himself in ONE FC. Harris “The Hitman” Sarmiento (36-25) made his move to ONE Fighting Championship, and will compete at a lower weight class than he’s used to. His first bout (in the 145-pounds division) in ONE FC will take place in Malaysia in March against Herbert Burns (2-0) in “War of Nations” … Last weekend was bittersweet as fans saw Toby Misech get caught in a Kimura submission, while Kailin Curran defeated Yoojin Jung by unanimous decision .. Good news for local fight fans! Destiny MMA, spearheaded by Jay Bolos, has announced May 3 bouts at the Blaisdell Arena. According to Bolos, the event hallmarks the return of knockout artist Mark Moreno. Stay tuned for more details!
