Congratulations to Kahala Jiu Jitsu, who celebrated its grand opening last Saturday. The facility is located within Kahala Crossfit. “We have the back section of the building,” explains owner Daynin Dashefsky, who has been training in the sport for 13 years. Kahala Jiu Jitsu is the first female-owned institute in Hawaii, and Dashefsky says that’s what sets them apart from the rest. “I found that in the last two years more and more women are very interested in jiu-jitsu and self defense but are very intimidated,” she says. “We really focus on fundamentals and beginners in our school, as well as the advanced.” Kahala Jiu Jitsu offers classes for men, women and children and also hosts a four-week self-defense program for adults. Weekday morning classes take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m., children’s classes are held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30, adult classes are Monday to Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., women’s only classes are Saturdays from 8 to 9 a.m., and adult (men and women) classes are Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday is reserved as an open-mat session from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 294-6678 or email info@kahalajiujitsu.com for more information. It’s an MMA-filled weekend with Star Elite Cage Fighting and Man-up & Stand-up putting on great bouts at Waipahu FilCom Center tonight (Friday) and Icon Grappling Association holding a submission/grappling tournament Saturday at Neal Blaisdell Center.
