Omoplata Wrist Lock
BY BURTON RICHARDSON
The omoplata is a bent arm lock where you entwine the opponent’s arm with your leg. It is a great move, but can be difficult to finish against someone that is skilled. This is why we usually use the omoplata as a sweep to go from the bottom to the top.
Once in position, you don’t have to only rely on torqueing the arm to get that tap – the wrist lock is there too. Once you have stabilized the position, grab the back of the opponent’s hand with both of your hands. Pin his elbow to the mat to keep his arm from moving. Drive down with both hands to apply a bent wrist lock. Even when the opponent is very strong, your body weight against his wrist means a win for you!
