Pauoa Valley native Dean Nishizaki is intimately familiar with the ’70s Plymouth Barracuda. While a student at Roosevelt High School, he got his first chance at owning the model, thanks to the influence of several friends who were avid domestic muscle fans, and immediately jumped at the opportunity.

Courtney Cadavona doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty. In fact, she’s completely at home being covered in grime or getting shot at with paintballs. More importantly, she has no problem fitting in with the growing trend of ladies who play with the boys in the import car scene, and comfortably holding their own.

For some in the import scene, stance is everything. It’s been around in one form or another since the first cart was drawn by the first horse. But what separates stance today is the extreme fitment that some enthusiasts absolutely lust over.

The 1993 Mazda RX-7 is a timeless classic whose status as one of the best handling cars ever is known throughout the import world. Even today, 23 years after its first U.S. production run, the automobile remains highly sought-after by enthusiasts and it’s still featured in everything from comics, anime, movies and video games.

There are several new paint technologies that are starting to come to the forefront of the modification scene. One of these is called dip and it’s a type of peelable paint solution. It works on practically everything — from wheels and fenders to the entire body of a car.

“Maybe it was the sound of the motor when I was young, but my first ride was a 1968 bug and (since then) I’ve never owned anything other than a VW,” said Moore, who grew up outside of Hawaii and whose life has been dedicated to restoring Bugs, Karmann Ghias and late-model VWs.

Based on his history, you’d assume Justin Rapoza would be rolling around in classic muscle. After all, he grew up at Hawaii Raceway Park watching his father, Robert, build hot rods. In fact, the younger Rapoza has owned quite a mix of eclectic rides over the years, including a Mazdaspeed Protégé, the Spec-V Sentra and a show-winning 1978 Porsche 911.
