Body Lock Counter

BY BURTON RICHARDSON

The body lock is where the opponent gets both of his arms under yours and hugs your body. You have to counter before you are thrown into a very dangerous position.

The opponent must get his hips close to yours to lift you or to effectively hook your leg for the takedown. A simple solution is to keep the opponent’s hips away from you by immediately putting both fists on the opponent’s waist. If you push with your palms, you might hurt your wrist as he pivots his hips side to side. Extend your arms and push your hips back and away to create space. You can then break his grip, work for a favorable clinch position, and start attacking.
