PaigeFTW: Slow Going At Tokyo Game Show
I used to remember Tokyo Game Show as an especially exciting time of year. Looking over this year’s conference, I can’t imagine why I ever felt that way. Nevertheless, there were a few gems of note amidst the desert sands.
‘Left Alive’
A new, non-Final Fantasy IP from Square Enix … that isn’t an RPG? Left Alive, which boasts talent including Shinji Hashimoto (Final Fantasy), Toshifumi Nabeshima (Armored Core) and Yoji Shinkawa (Metal Gear), is a survival action shooter that takes place in your customary futuristic dystopian world. It didn’t look that original in the trailer, if we’re being honest, but it certainly is unexpected enough to warrant another look when it releases next year for PS4.
‘Final Fantasy IX’
No, it’s not a full-blown remake, but it is a PS4-friendly version of the JRPG classic. Depending on who you ask online, it’s one of the finest Final Fantasy games ever made. Controversial opinion: I don’t agree. But this enhanced port features improved graphics, modernized booster modes (like turbo gameplay speed), trophies and more. So maybe I’ll give it another shot. It’s currently 20 percent off on PSN if you buy it this week.
Other Tidbits
Monster Hunter World has a worldwide release date of Jan. 26 … Dragon’s Crown Pro, a remaster of the 2013 dungeon crawler with bodacious character design, was announced for PS4 (after the news leaked a few days early). No word on a western release, but it seems likely given that the game has already been localized once before … Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum will join his Final Fantasy compatriots in the fighter Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, set to release early next year in America. While this is cool, it was also a no-brainer … Shadow of the Colossus got a new trailer, but no new info. Well, it’s something …
In retrospect, it was very much a Final Fantasy-oriented day of news, huh?
