Side Kick
BY BURTON RICHARDSON
This is one of the oldest kicks in martial arts, but it is just beginning to be used in MMA. It used to be thought that the side kick didn’t have enough power to be effective against a conditioned athlete, and that it left the kicker vulnerable. Those thoughts are changing.
The strong side kick is another weapon for your opponent to worry about. It can be used at the leg, midsection, or to the head. On execution, be sure to turn your hips and extend your heel for maximum impact. Use it like a jab to keep the opponent away or to set up other attacks. Practice well and you will have another arrow in your quiver as you walk onto the battlefield.
